HOW DO TRIGGER POINTS CAUSE MIGRAINES AND HEADACHES?

Trigger points, located within muscles of the back, neck and shoulders (trapezius), can be a source of headaches all on their own and lead to debilitating myofascial pain. In addition, trigger points can be present in patients with migraine, tension-type, post-traumatic, and other headache disorders, and can be worsening or perpetuating factors for the underlying headache condition.

WHAT ARE PRP TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are one of the latest advances in migraine/headache management, and unlike other pharmaceutical options, it is natural, safe, and has no contraindications. Rather than using steroid, a chemical, we use the growth factors contained in your platelets/plasma from your own blood. These growth factors have been shown to reduce inflammation and pain in both tendons and muscles.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

THE PRP CENTER DIFFERENCE

PRP trigger point injections are a great option for those patients who have already been diagnosed with chronic migraines/headaches by their physician (primary care or neurologist) and traditional treatments have not been successful. The PRP Center does not order tests, such as MRIs, to diagnose headaches. Therefore, we do require a recent visit with your physician and/or recent imaging in order for us to perform these injections.

IS PRP SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN?

PRP is scientifically proven to contain growth factors that can stimulate the healing process and reduce inflammation. There are national studies supporting PRP's efficacy in reducing myofascial painas well as the role of trigger points in causing migraines and headaches

WHO PERFORMS THE INJECTION? IS IT SAFE?

At The PRP Center, only board certified physicians and physician assistants perform PRP injections, including trigger point injections for migraines and/or headaches. PRP uses the growth factor contained in your own blood to provide healing and pain relief. For this reason, it is one of the safest treatments you can possibly do. There may be slight tenderness at the injection site right after.

NUMBER OF TREATMENTS

Patients often require 3-4 treatments to notice a decrease in frequency in recurring headaches. We will usually perform the series of injections spaced 2 weeks apart. Maintenance injections can be performed 1-2 times per year if the initial treatment provides relief.

IS PRP COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Unfortunately, PRP is not covered by insurance. Although our providers have been performing PRP injections since 2011, and it is a treatment used successfully by thousands of doctors around the world, insurance companies still consider it to be a "newer" treatment as compared to more traditional methods (such as pharmaceuticals).
